Over the 13 years since we started our digital marketing agency, Nick and I have read so many books about business. Some are full of BS, some are mediocre, but there are 5 that stand out among the rest. Something from each of these books changed the way we operate, and each has stayed with us to help us grow.
The E-Myth by Michael Gerber
This is the very first book we recommend to anyone who asks us about starting a business. It takes you through the steps of starting a business, how important it is to work on your business not just in your business, and explains what he calls the “Entrepreneurial Myth.” That is, “the fatal assumption that an individual who understands the technical work of a business can successfully run a business that does that technical work.” Mindblowing! There is a reason it ends up on all of the recommended reading lists for small businesses. It’s an eye-opener.
This is Marketing by Seth Godin
Obviously, marketing is central to any business’s success, and the way Godin breaks it down in this book is great for small businesses. He discusses the importance of knowing the distinctions between marketing and advertising and how the art of positioning yourself in the market is key. All in all, you will leave this book having a better understanding of how to see the world as a marketer and where your product or service fits in.
Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller
The ideas behind Story Brand are ones we practice daily. It’s a great, condensed guide of best practices marketers like us apply in building successful brands. In this book, Miller talks about the importance of being clear and concise in your messaging and the idea that the customer (not your business) is the “hero” of your brand story. It is full of practical tips on how to craft the right message for your business from start to finish.
Start with Why by Simon Sinek
In this book, Sinek stresses the importance of a question every business owner should know– why do you do what you do? It’s easy to answer what you do or even how you do it, but without your “why,” you won’t ever really inspire people to buy in to your mission. One of our favorite marketing quotes comes from this book: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
Lost and Founder by Rand Fishkin
In this book, the founder of Moz.com calls out the truth about getting a startup off the ground. Spoiler alert: It’s harder than it seems. This is a real look at the ups and downs, the risk, and the balls it takes to start a successful business. He shines a light on the harm quick fixes and “growth hacks” can do to a business and stresses the importance of openness within your team.
